You have a shoot coming up and you want to know the camera crew you are hiring will do a good job?

Well here are some things to think about when choosing between all the production companies and freelancers out there offering to make your production for you.

Cost is always going to be a factor but you don’t want to be paying twice because the lighting cameraman you hired did not know how to light.

I started working in live television over 13 years ago. Live television was a great discipline to teach that you need to get it right first time. I then moved into drama where you could spend a bit more time making the picture look good to tell the story.

But it also taught that working in a big team of people each fulfilling there own roles you did not want to let the team down in yours.

The term broadcast standard is now all encompassing meaning television, radio and online web media. Where anyone can post videos on the internet sometimes this is deemed as broadcasting. This is not a bad thing as it does showcase many talents of independent filmmakers, but it does mean that when you hire a Lighting CaneraMan are you getting someone professionally trained to industry standard or someone self taught at home with a handy cam.

I have experienced this first hand. Being called in to reshoot footage on a number of occasions because the cameraman they thought they were getting turned not to be broadcast standard.

If you need to hire a camera team with equipment do think about cost. If someone has invested in £25,000 of equipment but give you a to good to be quote of including the kit it may be because they need the experience.

If you are going to pick a camera team, think of doing the following-

Check for broadcast credits such a BBC or ITV.
Check there client list and see more than one video example. Not just a showreel of best bits.
Ask for references.
